How the day runs

Trains leave Southampton Central for Portsmouth Harbour about every half hour; sit on the right for the Solent. At Portsmouth Harbour the dockyard entrance is across the road from the station, Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower are a five-minute walk the other way along the waterfront. The dockyard ticket for one attraction is timed, so pick the ship when you buy. Allow 90 minutes for Victory with the audio guide, two hours for the Mary Rose museum, and 45 minutes for the harbour tour that runs from the dockyard jetty past the modern naval base.

Beyond the dockyard

Southsea, a mile along the seafront from Gunwharf, has the D-Day Story museum and the Southsea Castle from which Henry VIII watched the Mary Rose sink in 1545. The Spinnaker Tower's viewing deck at 100 metres looks across the Solent to the Isle of Wight and back over the harbour to the dockyard, and takes 30 minutes including the lift. Gunwharf Quays is a discount outlet centre with 90 shops for a last purchase before sailing.

Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight

Wightlink's catamaran to Ryde leaves from the pier beside Portsmouth Harbour station, so a Portsmouth morning can turn into an Isle of Wight afternoon; the Red Funnel route back from Cowes lands at Town Quay in Southampton, which makes a loop possible without returning to Portsmouth.
