If you have three hours

Walk the walls from the Bargate down to the West Gate where the Mayflower and Speedwell lay in 1620, cut through Bugle Street for Tudor House, and finish at SeaCity for the Titanic galleries. That is about two miles and the museum takes 90 minutes.

If you have a full day

Take the Red Jet to Cowes (28 minutes from Town Quay), or the train to Winchester (15 minutes) for the cathedral. Details on the day trips page.

Eating and shopping

Westquay has the chain restaurants and a cinema on its Esplanade side facing the walls; Oxford Street near Ocean Village has the independent restaurants and the White Star Tavern; the High Street and Bedford Place have the pubs. Southampton's market day is Friday on Bargate Street. For a last-minute purchase before a cruise, Westquay opens at 09:00 and is a ten-minute walk from City and Horizon terminals.

With children

SeaCity's interactive Titanic model and the Solent Sky flying boat you can climb into are the two reliable hits; both have family tickets (SeaCity £44 for five, Solent Sky £30). Mayflower Park on the waterfront has a playground and a view of the ships coming in. The Red Jet to Cowes counts as a boat trip for a child and takes 28 minutes each way.
