Southampton is 75 miles from London and has no direct rail link from Heathrow, so the choice is between a pre-booked car, the National Express coach, or a train from Waterloo. Journey times below are from the operators; cruise-day traffic on the M3 and around Dock Gate 10 can add twenty minutes.

Which gate

Dock Gate 4 for QEII and Ocean (Eastern Docks). Dock Gate 10 for City, Horizon and Mayflower (Western Docks); Dock Gate 8 for City and Dock Gate 20 for Mayflower are the quieter alternatives. The terminal pages have turn-by-turn directions from each gate.

From the station to the ship

Southampton Central has taxi ranks on both sides; use the south exit. A taxi to any terminal is 5-10 minutes and roughly £10. The free QuayConnect bus runs every 35 minutes from the station through the city centre to Town Quay, which suits the Red Funnel terminals and Ocean Terminal but does not stop at any cruise building.

Timing the arrival

Boarding windows at Southampton usually open between 11:00 and 12:30 and close 60-90 minutes before the ship sails, typically 15:30 to 16:30. Work backwards from your boarding time printed in the cruise documents: a car from Heathrow needs 1 h 25 plus the walk from the gate, so a 10:30 pick-up at Terminal 5 lands you at the terminal at noon. From Waterloo, the 09:05 or 09:35 trains arrive before 11:15 on most timetables and leave time for the taxi. On disembarkation day ships clear passengers from about 07:00 to 10:00; a 12:00 departure from Southampton Central or a 13:00 Heathrow check-in is safe for most lines.

Luggage, porters and taxis

Porters take cases at the drop-off lane of every terminal, so the problem is only getting the bags from the station to the lane. Taxis at Southampton Central take four passengers and four cases; larger groups should pre-book an estate or people carrier. Bags left for the day go to a storage point in the centre, see luggage storage. For the coach from Heathrow, National Express allows two cases per person in the hold.

What is the cheapest way to get to Southampton cruise port from London?

South Western Railway advance fares from London Waterloo start at £10.10 and the train takes 1 h 12 to 2 hours; add a £10 taxi from Southampton Central to the terminal.

Is there a shuttle from Heathrow to Southampton cruise terminals?

There is no cruise shuttle. National Express route 032 runs up to 14 coaches a day from Heathrow to Southampton Coach Station from about £18, and private transfers go door to door for £117-180 per car.

Which dock gate do I use for my terminal?

Dock Gate 4 for QEII and Ocean, Dock Gate 10 (or 8) for City and Horizon, Dock Gate 20 for Mayflower. Each terminal page has the turn-by-turn directions.

Next step: get to the terminal without the queue

Pre-booked cars meet you at Heathrow, Gatwick or Southampton Central and drive straight to your terminal. Prices are fixed when you book, drivers track the flight, and the car waits if you are late. Taxis from the rank at Southampton Central cost around £10 and take 5-10 minutes.
