Southampton Airport (SOU) is the closest airport to the port, 4.6 to 5.3 miles from the terminals. Flights are domestic and short-haul (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Jersey, Amsterdam, Dublin and others), so it suits passengers arriving from elsewhere in the UK and Ireland.

Which option when

With hand luggage only, the train is the cheapest and avoids the Saturday queue at the taxi rank: Parkway to Central is one stop, and from Central the City and Horizon terminals are a flat 12-15 minute walk through Dock Gate 10. With cases, the taxi from the rank outside arrivals goes straight to the terminal door in 20-25 minutes; agree the terminal name and berth number before setting off, because Eastern and Western Docks use different gates. Groups of three or more pay less per head in a pre-booked people carrier than on the rank.

Southampton Airport Parkway station is a two-minute walk from the terminal building, with around 138 trains a day to Southampton Central run by South Western Railway, CrossCountry, GWR and Southern. Drive times from the airport by terminal: Ocean 4.6 miles, City 4.7, Horizon 4.8, QEII 5.2, Mayflower 5.3, all about 20-25 minutes.

How far is Southampton Airport from the cruise terminal?

4.6 to 5.3 miles depending on the terminal, 20-25 minutes by taxi.

Is there a bus from Southampton Airport to the cruise port?

No direct bus. Take the train one stop to Southampton Central (7-16 minutes, from £4.30) and a taxi from there, or a taxi from the airport rank.

Which airlines fly to Southampton Airport?

Mainly domestic and short-haul carriers to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Jersey, Dublin, Amsterdam and holiday destinations. Long-haul passengers use Heathrow or Gatwick.

Arriving the day before

Southampton Airport has a Premier Inn and a Holiday Inn Express beside the terminal, but staying there puts you five miles from the docks with no advantage over the city hotels, which are the same taxi distance from the terminals and next to the restaurants. Flights from Scotland and Northern Ireland land from early morning; a 10:00 arrival leaves time to reach even a 12:00 boarding by taxi. If the flight is late in the day, a city hotel and a morning taxi is the safer plan.

Airport to the ship

A pre-booked car with a name board costs little more than the rank and removes the queue on a cruise Saturday.
