Which train to take

Direct trains leave Waterloo from platforms on the south side of the concourse; the fast services stop at Woking, Basingstoke, Winchester and Southampton Airport Parkway only. The slower trains add Eastleigh and a dozen small stations and take up to two hours, so check the journey time when booking, not just the price. First class costs little more on advance fares and has the luggage space. Avoid the 07:00 to 09:00 trains out of Waterloo on weekdays only if you want a seat for the cases; capacity is not an issue at weekends.

Arriving by coach instead

National Express runs from London Victoria Coach Station to Southampton Coach Station in about 2 h 30 for less than the walk-up train fare. It is the fallback when advance train tickets are gone, and the coach station is a 6-minute walk from Southampton Central.
