- Winchester College and College Street. Jane Austen died at number 8 in 1817.

Half a day is enough for the cathedral and the Great Hall; a full day adds St Cross and lunch in the Square.

History in a sentence
Alfred the Great made Winchester his capital in the ninth century, the Norman kings kept their treasury here, and the cathedral that replaced the Saxon minster in 1079 is still the longest Gothic nave in Europe at 170 metres. The Round Table in the Great Hall was made around 1290 and painted for Henry VIII in 1522. Jane Austen came to Winchester for medical care in May 1817 and died in College Street two months later; she is buried in the nave.
From the station
Winchester station is on the north-west edge of the centre. Walk down City Road and Jewry Street to the High Street in ten minutes; the cathedral close is through the Buttercross passage on the right, the Great Hall is uphill at the top of the High Street by the Westgate. The water meadows begin behind the college on College Walk, and St Cross is a mile further along the river. Everything is flat except the short climb to the Great Hall.
